Calving Tips

Herd calving is one of the most critical periods in livestock management, directly influencing productivity, profitability, and long-term herd health. Proper preparation and monitoring can significantly reduce calf mortality and improve recovery rates for cows.

Successful calving begins with good record-keeping. Farmers should track expected calving dates, body condition scores, and previous calving history. Cows should be maintained in moderate body condition, as underweight or overweight animals are more likely to experience complications. Close observation during the final weeks of gestation helps identify early signs of labor, such as restlessness, udder development, and isolation from the herd.

A clean, dry, and secure calving area is essential to minimize infection risks. During delivery, intervention should only occur when necessary and with proper hygiene. After birth, ensure the calf is breathing normally and receives colostrum within the first few hours, as this strengthens immunity.

Post-calving care is equally important. Monitor cows for retained placenta, infections, or reduced appetite. Strong nutrition and access to clean water support recovery and milk production.

Effective herd calving management not only improves survival rates but also sets the foundation for stronger, healthier livestock performance.
